As Adam Khoo pointed out in his book “Master Your Mind Design Your Destiny”, there are four basic mindsets of people in the way they read books:
1. People that have this resistant attitude that “it won’t work”. No matter how many self-help books they came across, they just think those ideas discussed in it won’t work.
2. The second group of people read books because they are curious. They want to see what is so great in it. They get entertained and inspired while reading, but it does not last long. They are passive after that, not doing anything about it.
3. The “let’s give it a try” group of people will read a book and try out some ideas in the book. They did not participated fully and eventually they hardly gain anything from that book.
4. The fourth type of people will give in everything to try the ideas discussed in the book. They read, understand and learn them well.
So what type of reader I am? Currently I am definitely the third type. I am still skeptical with some points that I read in a book. But I am moving into the fourth type. However I am the first type of people when it comes to school textbook. It is so dull that I can’t find any enjoyment reading them. Textbooks just don’t work for me but they are the necessary readings.
I have a special reading habit. I will read a business book, a finance book, a self-help book and a fiction book at the same time. I find it much more interesting and productive this way. When I am overloaded with new ideas and thought from the business book, I would switch to my favorite fiction novel. It prevents my brain from overwhelming and have time for some entertainment.
Reading can really be a great thing to do. Turn on some jazz, lie on your favorite sofa and grab any book of your choice. However reading can be an enjoyable moment only and only if you read a book that is right to you.
