So I was quite happy that last week I made it for the final round of interview for the entrepreneurship society management committee selection. Gladly, I attended the interview. While reading the invitation offer, I know I might have troubles soon.
Firstly, I applied for a management type of positions. They allocated me for the interview for Local Outreach program due to the large applicants pool and it is highly competitive this year. Local Outreach program requires people to do sales pitching and teaching young junior college students. Both are things that I do not have prior experience and I know for sure I will have trouble dealing with the interview which seeks people that can do this.
Nevertheless, I decided to give it a try. Reasons are, I will still have to do sales pitch one day as an entrepreneur. Even if I am an engineer, I still have to sell my design plan. I need to change the way I learn things, instead reading from books, now it is time for me to grab any chance to try anything. I have no fear of failing.
So after the simulation test, which requires me to do a sales pitch, I presented my ideas well. But I lack the most crucial thing that sales pitching requires, ENERGY!! The interviewer was right, I am not enthusiastic at all. How silly I am to forget about that. I am a reasonably ok presenter but not a sales pitcher…..yet.
So now I know what I need to do. I know my strengths and weaknesses more. Books can only take you that far. Field tests are the catalysts to allow you to learn faster.
I always believe in this. A close door forces you to open new door of endless possibilities. Now I shall proceed on, improve my weakness, find new opportunities and dive into the battlefield again.
If you have been following my posts, I mentioned that luck is important and how to maximize luck by increasing randomness. Today it works like a charm for me again.
Usually I will always use the same route and the same time to go and have my lunch. So today, a beautiful Sunday morning, I tried a different route, and go at a time that I rarely use to. BAM, I met two Alumni from NUS and NTU that having workshop on entrepreneurship. So many people walking around and I am the one picked by them and coincidentally they have something about entrepreneurship which are things that I am dying to learn and so passionate about. We had a long talk and I guess I will meet them again in the near future. Another door opened just by trying new things.
Bottom line is, never be upset when you fail. Failure is the only known way that guarantees success. Failure is a message sent to you to inform you to change your strategy. A lost opportunity can be replaced by a new ones, as long as your spirit still roars! Always try new things.Remember that Edison only know one way to make a bulb, but 1000+ ways that can’t make a bulb.
